Lee Williams finished the 2007 season ranked 96th on the Nationwide Tour money list, despite playing in just 17 events. The former Auburn star earned conditional status on the Nationwide Tour for the 2008 season.
Williams ranked third on the Nationwide Tour in putting, and was 36th on tour with a 70.64 scoring average.
He recently took time away from his offseason practice schedule to answer a few questions about his first year on the Nationwide Tour.
Q: What did you learn during the 2007 season on the Nationwide Tour?
LW: This year was a great learning experience. To be able to go out there and compete every week on the Nationwide Tour is a challenge, and I feel that my game continues to get stronger and stronger. There were some Top-10 finishes this year (7th at the Pete Dye Classic, 10th at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic) where I felt that if I rolled in a few more putts I would have had a chance to contend. Overall, my goal is still to get to the PGA Tour, and I’m working hard as we speak to put myself in that position after the 2008 year.
Q: What are you doing to prepare for the 2008 season?
LW: I’m spending the next few months working on my game at home here in Alabama at Willow Point Golf Club and working on any small adjustments I need to make with my coach.
Q: What was your favorite Shot of 2007?
LW: “I had a hole-in-one on the 2nd hole on Saturday at the Mark Christopher Charity Classic Presented by County of San Bernardino. The second it came off my club I knew it was looking good, but it’s tough to describe the elation of making a hole-in-one. Behind the tee box, there were two cars parked so I immediately thought that I had won a car. In the end, I found out that I did not in fact win a car. That part was sort of a let down.
Q: What was your favorite memory of the 2007 season?
LW: Playing in the Buick Open was a great experience. That was my first official PGA Tour event, and to make the cut was a good confidence booster for me. I have always known that I can play with the guys out on the PGA Tour, but this was further validation of that. I played some really solid golf up there at the Buick, but I just wish that I had made some more putts.
Q: What was your favorite tournament last year?
LW: Despite not playing well, I’d still say the U.S. Open was my favorite tournament of 2007. I don’t think you can beat that atmosphere in all of golf. The fans are out there on every single hole, on every tee box. This was my third consecutive U.S. Open and it is still one of the greatest weeks of the year. This one was also special because in 2003 I played the U.S. Amateur at Oakmont and to be able to come back to that course and play it as a U.S. Open was really a great experience.
Q: In the spirit of the holiday season, what is the best Christmas gift you have ever received?
LW: In 1999 I received my first car. My birthday is two days after Christmas, so this was sort of a combination of a Christmas / Birthday gift. It was a dark green, 1998 Mustang.
